Special signs will be installed on streets in South Maroubra with connections to the Battle of the Coral Sea as part of 75th anniversary commemorations for the World War II conflict.

The design will be unveiled at a free community event in Coral Sea Park on Saturday 6 May 2017 from 11.15am – 12noon.

The Battle of the Coral Sea was a major air and naval battle from 4-8 May 1942 fought to the north east coast of Australia between the Japanese Imperial Navy and US and Australian Forces at a critical stage of the war.

Randwick Mayor Noel D’Souza said the battle had a profound impact on the Randwick City community.

“At the time the battle marked a distinct turning point in the war and strengthened the bond between Australia and United States.

“Not only did servicemen and women from Randwick City serve in this battle, but allied ships were re-supplied and re-armed through the Randwick Naval depot and army encampments were in place at Randwick racecourse.

“After the war, Council built a new park on the site of the old Maroubra Speedway and named it Coral Sea Park.

“More than a dozen streets around Coral Sea Park such as Lexington, Yorktown and Chicago are named after US battle ships that fought alongside Australian vessels,” Mayor D’Souza said.

A community commemoration event, including a free BBQ will be held at Coral Sea Park in South Maroubra on Saturday 6 May 2017 from 11.15am to 12noon presented by Randwick City Council and the Maroubra RSL sub-branch.
