CEO of Government Property NSW, Brett Newman, today announced plans for the sale of one of Millers Point’s premium properties, the historic 10-bedroom Darling House.

The free-standing, 19th century two-storey sandstone residence is located at 8-12 Trinity Avenue.

Darling House sits on a 781sqm block and includes a cantilevered verandah, 10 bathrooms and off-street parking.

“This is a classic residence of Millers Point and comes with a rich history stemming more than 170 years,” Mr Newman said.

“Strong market interest is expected for Darling House, with proceeds from its sale to be redirected into new social housing projects across NSW.”

Darling House was constructed on the site of a former sandstone quarry by prominent local businessman and entrepreneur Joseph Farris between 1842 and 1844.

Farris had extensive interests in real estate, boat building and hotels, and was the proprietor of the Young Princess Hotel, later the Whaler’s Arms Hotel, a building which still stands directly opposite Darling House on Lower Fort Street today.

Although originally constructed in the simple yet elegant Georgian style, a Victorian verandah and French doors were added to the first floor around 1860.

Farris himself never occupied Darling House, leasing it out to various middle-class professionals until it was reclaimed by the Sydney Harbour Trust in 1901, following the outbreak of bubonic plague.

Darling House was then leased out to portside workers until 1948-9 when it was converted into a warehouse.

In the mid-1990s Darling House was converted to an aged care facility and underwent major restoration works including the addition of a sympathetic modern infill building, designed by Heritage Architect, Howard Tanner.

Darling House is bound by protections under the Heritage Act 1977, and has been deemed an item of heritage significance on both the State Heritage Register (SHR) and Sydney Local Environmental Plan (LEP) 2012.

Darling House is listed with McGrath Estate Agents and Savills and will go to auction on February 25.
